What is the Pilsen Together Chamber of Commerce Art Festival?
The Pilsen Together Chamber of Commerce Art Festival is a three day community event: a celebration of the community’s long-standing commitment to artistic expression.
Each year for the past seven years artists from the community and around the country have been invited to submit work to participate. From the artists who submit work, about 45 are invited to partake in the festival. The selection of artists is not based on an artist’s popularity, résumé or commercial relevance. Most of the selected artists are members of the community: they may be students, amateurs or established artists. The selection process is set up to ensure a good mix of artists at all levels of experience.
The objective of the Pilsen Together Chamber of Commerce Art Festival is to help artists profit from selling their artwork. We do not charge an entry fee and we do not take a percentage from the art work that is sold. In doing so, we are the only organization that provides a completely free venue for artists.
The Festival consists of two parts:
The first part of the Festival is the silent auction/gala which is always on a Friday evening and is hosted by the National Museum of Mexican Fine Arts. Works by all of the participating artists are auctioned at this event. The media, curators, and artists as well as the event sponsors are all invited to bid, mingle and enjoy dinner and live entertainment.
The second part of the festival is the two day Art Fair which is on the Saturday and Sunday following the silent auction/gala. The fair is free to the public. This Year for the first time in our festival's history we will be having the art fair on 18th Street between Ashland and Laflin.
The fair hosts all of the artists who participated in the silent auction along with a many performing artists which set the mood for the fair. Performers include bands, solo artists, dancers and poets. Community organizations and sponsors also participate in the fair and provide free information about their businesses or organizations as well as present attendees with many free giveaways. There are also food, drinks and activities for the children.
This year the Festival will kick off on the weekend of August 28 from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM with the silent art auction/gala at the National Museum of Mexican Fine Arts (located at 1852 West 19th Street, Chicago, IL.) The Art Fair will follow on Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30, 2008 on 18th Street between Ashland and Laflin.
Past artists have included Mabel Vilner, Ana Fernandez, Fabiola Guzman, Nancy Witte, Lyle Carbajal, Juan de la Mora, Chris Campagna, Rine Boyer, Salvador Jimenez, and Rachel Borchers. Performers have included Caliente Band, Guia Reveria,Kilslo, The Gwen Mitchell Experience and many other local and international artists.

Early this spring the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) initiated a new series in its SubTalk program consisting of excerpts from great thinkers Called Train of Thought, the series features quotations in history, philosophy, literature, and science chosen by Columbia University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Train of Thought is an extension of the long-running and familiar Poetry in Motion series which had a very successful 15 year run. This new SubTalk venture is a collaboration between Columbia University, The MTA and Barnes and Noble.
You can see the Train of Thought on trains and buses in all 5 new York city boroughs. Quotations will change every 3 months and will feature objects and books from the Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
